Record Grape Crush for The New Zealand Wine Company

The New Zealand Wine Company has completed its 2006 grape crush of just over 3000 tonnes being 1493 tonnes of NZWC’s own grapes representing a 50% increase over last vintage with the balance from contract processing. This exceeds the previous record crush from last year by over 800 tonnes.

“This places the company in a good position to continue to take advantage of the growing demand for our wine particularly in the United States market” said New Zealand Wine Company CEO Rob White.

The early start in mid March and the compact nature of the vintage resulted in the grape intake being completed before the start date of last years vintage. The nature of the vintage put extra pressure on the winery but following last years upgrade and the effort of staff a relatively smooth vintage was assured.

“The best fruit into the winery has to be the Sauvignon Blanc” said Chief Winemaker Dave Pearce, “the early season suited the variety well and vintage 2006 will be another great year for Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc”.
